Mariska Hargitay Almost Walked Away from Law & Order: SVU

In an era where TV shows are frequently cut short after just a few seasons, it’s remarkable to see some series extend beyond a decade. Law & Order: SVU stands out as one of those enduring successes, having reached its 17th season, largely thanks to Mariska Hargitay’s unwavering dedication. Yet, even Hargitay herself once wrestled with the idea of leaving the show.

Hargitay admitted that she was on the brink of quitting SVU but ultimately chose to stay after considerable soul-searching. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “It took a lot of soul-searching to get to a place where I felt continuing was the right move.”

The departure of her co-star Christopher Meloni in Season 12 also cast doubt on her future with the series. Despite Meloni’s exit to explore new ventures, SVU has continued to flourish. Now, Hargitay is gearing up for Season 21, set to premiere this fall. However, the upcoming season will see the departure of another cast member, Phillip Winchester.

Law & Order itself had a remarkable run of 20 seasons on NBC before it was canceled, and SVU is poised to become the longest-running show in the franchise with the 2019-2020 season.

In a candid interview with People, Hargitay revealed that NBC and the SVU team have managed to keep her engaged and passionate about her role. She began directing episodes and finds that the show still surprises her with fresh storylines. Her portrayal of Detective Olivia Benson has not only been a career-defining role but has also opened doors to exciting opportunities, including a guest appearance on SNL.

Hargitay acknowledges that while some scenes have become routine, like any job, the role of Benson remains thrilling and rewarding. She has even expressed her desire to continue with SVU until at least its 25-year mark.

The lingering question is whether SVU will ever welcome Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler back for a guest appearance. Only time will tell.
