Fans of the Law & Order franchise are over the moon with excitement about Christopher Meloni’s return as Elliot Stabler. His former co-star, Mariska Hargitay, who continues to shine as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, welcomed him back with a heartfelt message on social media.
After years of anticipation, Meloni is making his highly-anticipated return to the Law & Order universe. However, he will not be reprising his role on Law & Order: SVU. Instead, Meloni will star in a new Stabler-centric spinoff on NBC. This series, which has received a straight-to-series order, will focus on “an NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this new series will have the capability to crossover with Law & Order: SVU, as well as other Dick Wolf franchises, including Chicago and FBI.
Stabler’s departure from Law & Order: SVU occurred at the end of its twelfth season in 2011 due to contract negotiations between NBC Universal and Meloni falling through. Fans have eagerly awaited his return ever since.
In addition to this upcoming series, there have been other Law & Order spinoffs in recent years. Law & Order: Hate Crimes was also in development at NBC with a straight-to-series order, but it was shelved last year and remains in development without recent updates.
Beyond the original Law & Order series and Law & Order: SVU, the franchise has spawned several spinoffs: Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, Law & Order: LA, and Law & Order: True Crime.
Creator Dick Wolf shared his vision for the series, stating, “As with all of my crime shows, I want to depict what’s really going on in our cities and shine a light on the wide-ranging victims and show that justice can prevail. Twenty years ago when SVU began, very few people felt comfortable coming forward and reporting these crimes, but when you bring the stories into people’s living rooms – with characters as empathetic as Olivia Benson – a real dialogue can begin. That’s what I hope we can do with this new show in a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level.”
Mariska Hargitay officially welcomed Meloni back with a heartwarming tweet, sharing a photo of the two from the show. She wrote, “Happy birthday @Chris_Meloni #It’sBeenAWhile #WelcomeHome.” She also posted a similar message on Instagram, receiving a heartfelt response from Meloni himself.
“Saddle up gurl, we ridin again. And TY for all the BD wishes,” Meloni commented on Hargitay’s Instagram post.
Law & Order: SVU, now in its 21st season, continues to air on Thursdays on NBC, and fans eagerly await the premiere of Meloni’s new series to see the iconic duo together again.
