For many fans of Law & Order: SVU, imagining the series without Mariska Hargitay or Ice-T is nearly impossible. Hargitay has been a fixture since the show’s inception, playing Detective Olivia Benson from the very first episode of season 1. Ice-T, portraying Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, joined the cast at the start of season 2. Over the years, they have become synonymous with the series and have formed a close friendship off-screen.
From Neighbors to Co-Stars
Interestingly, Hargitay and Ice-T lived near each other in Los Angeles before they met on SVU. During a 2018 appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Ice-T revealed that they could see each other’s houses from their respective homes back in the day, even though they hadn’t met yet.
Hargitay’s Nervous First Meeting with Ice-T
In the same year, the duo appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Hargitay recounted her initial nervousness about meeting Ice-T. She admitted to being intimidated by his reputation as a renowned rapper and cultural icon.
“Well, I was so nervous to meet Ice-T because he was a rapper, he was O.G. He was like the man, he was the rapper,” Hargitay shared. “And so I didn’t even know what O.G. meant back in the day. But I was excited about it. ‘The O.G. is coming, the O.G. is coming,’” she joked. “So he came on the show, and he was the sweetest, kindest, most open… We call him the ‘Philosopher’ on the show, and it’s been such a joy. And it’s been for 20 years, an education for me. He’s taught me about so many things…”
Ice-T’s Admiration for Hargitay
Ice-T reciprocated the admiration, calling Hargitay “the best.” He recounted how he originally signed on for just four episodes, but the positive work environment and camaraderie extended his stay indefinitely.
“We’re very fortunate, you know, to be on a show where everyone likes each other,” Ice-T said. “Everyone gets along. 20 years is a long time, and it’s a very cool work environment. Mariska’s the best.” He added, “I’m not going nowhere till she’s gone,” highlighting his commitment to the show and their friendship.
A Lasting Partnership On and Off Screen
Since Ice-T joined the cast in season 2, Law & Order: SVU has reached its 22nd season, a testament to the enduring popularity of the show and the chemistry between its stars. Both Hargitay’s and Ice-T’s characters have advanced in their careers, with Benson becoming the Captain and Tutuola rising to Sergeant. Their strong on-screen partnership mirrors their real-life bond, as they continue to support each other both professionally and personally.
As fans tune in to season 22 of Law & Order: SVU, which premiered on November 12, they can look forward to seeing more of the dynamic duo. The season promises to bring new challenges and triumphs for Benson and Tutuola, whose friendship has become a cornerstone of the show.
With Ice-T committed to staying on the series as long as Hargitay is there, their connection is a heartwarming example of the deep bonds that can form in the high-pressure world of television. Their partnership, forged over two decades, has become a beloved element of SVU, making them more than just co-stars—they’re family.
