We live in an unusual era for television, where many Netflix and network shows are cut short after just a couple of seasons. Yet, paradoxically, there are a number of long-running TV programs that have surpassed the decade mark. One such show is Law & Order: SVU, which has reached Season 17, largely due to Mariska Hargitay’s enduring commitment to the drama. Interestingly, even Hargitay herself once questioned whether staying on the show was the right decision.
Hargitay has revealed that she was on the verge of quitting Law & Order: SVU but ultimately decided to stay after some deep soul-searching. Reflecting on her decision, she shared:
“It took a lot of soul-searching to get to a place where I felt continuing was the right move.”
The departure of Christopher Meloni in Season 12 also made Hargitay contemplate leaving the series. Despite Meloni moving on to pursue other opportunities, SVU has continued to thrive. Now, Mariska Hargitay is set to star in Season 21 of Law & Order: SVU, premiering this fall. However, the series will bid farewell to one of its actors, Phillip Winchester, ahead of the new season.
The original Law & Order aired for 20 seasons on NBC before it was canceled. The 2019-2020 season will solidify SVU as the longest-running show in the franchise.
In an interview with People, Hargitay mentioned that NBC and Law & Order: SVU have consistently found ways to keep her engaged and enthusiastic about her role. For instance, she began directing episodes of the procedural, and the show still manages to surprise her with its storylines. Additionally, portraying such an iconic character has opened up unique opportunities, including a guest spot on SNL.
While Hargitay admits that some scenes have become second nature to her, she acknowledges that everyone experiences routine moments in their jobs. Despite this, playing Detective Olivia Benson remains an exciting and fulfilling role for her. Hargitay has even expressed a desire to stay with SVU until at least the 25-year mark.
The question remains: will Law & Order: SVU ever bring back Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler for a guest appearance? Only time will tell.
