Mariska Hargitay, known for her role on Law & Order: SVU, eagerly anticipated motherhood. When she and her husband, Peter Hermann, welcomed their son August in 2006, they chose his name with deep consideration and affection. The name August held profound significance for Hargitay and her family, far beyond the obvious connection to their wedding month.
In an interview with TV Guide, Hargitay revealed that while it’s true their wedding and Peter’s birthday are both in August, the name was chosen for its historical and cultural resonance. “August is a name with a rich heritage in Peter’s family, spanning over 200 years,” Hargitay shared. “We wanted a name with a European flair, something literary and artistic, reminiscent of figures like Swedish playwright August Strindberg and French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The name signifies strength and nobility, embodying qualities of a serene and revered leader.”
Hargitay’s choice was influenced by her desire to give August a unique name that was meaningful but not eccentric. “We wanted something distinct, but not too outlandish,” she explained, referring to her preference over names like ‘Burlap.’
The full name given to their son is August Miklos Friedrich Hermann. While Hermann has five names, Hargitay opted for a simpler approach, allowing August just one additional name to avoid overwhelming complexity.
August’s arrival also motivated Hargitay to maintain her fitness, not for vanity but to keep up with her growing family. She emphasized that her goal was to sustain her energy levels. “It’s not about being fat or thin. It’s about staying energized to support my kids and be the best wife and mom I can be,” Hargitay told People. Her fitness routine involved a balanced diet, avoiding sugars and wheat, and enjoying wine in moderation.
Eventually, Hargitay and Hermann expanded their family through adoption, bringing home Amaya Josephine and Andrew Nicolas in 2011. Hargitay candidly admitted that while adoption was always part of their plan, August believed he was the mastermind behind their growing family. “August thinks it was his idea to have a baby sister and a baby brother,” Hargitay laughed. “He feels pretty proud and powerful about it!”
Through every stage of her journey, Hargitay’s love for her family and dedication to her role as a mother shines brightly.
