Unexpectedly, “Law and Order: SVU” has turned 25 years old and Mariska Hargitay is 60 years old, although she is old, she will always be young in our hearts.

When Law & Order: SVU returns on January 18 for its 25th season, it not only solidifies Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson as the longest-running character in a prime-time drama series but also cements the show’s status as the longest-running drama series in television history.

In an exclusive interview with People, Hargitay reflected on her journey portraying Benson and turning 60 this year.

“I started as the second detective alongside Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). He was the male lead, more experienced, and I was trying to catch up,” she shared with the magazine.

As Benson rose through the ranks to lieutenant and finally to squad captain, Hargitay also ascended to the lead role after Meloni’s departure in 2011.

“As I became more comfortable with the character, you saw this powerful woman emerge,” she said.

Hargitay described this evolution as a rebirth, stating, “In a way, it was a rebirth. It was powerful, exciting, and beautifully uncomfortable to reckon with one’s own power.”

She also referenced the fans’ popular phrase, WWOBD (What Would Olivia Benson Do?). “Fans would always talk about it, and one day it hit me. I also have those moments where I slip into her mindset. If there’s a crisis, I take over and lead. Being strong and fearless. It’s the perfect feminist story,” Hargitay explained.

Reflecting on the show’s 25-year run, Hargitay noted two opposing feelings. “One is, I can’t believe it’s been 25 years, a quarter of a century! And the other is, I can’t see it any other way,” she said.

Hargitay’s dedication extends beyond the screen. She trained to become a rape crisis counselor and founded the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004, inspired by survivors who told her that Law & Order: SVU motivated them to report their abuse or assault.

As she approaches her 60th birthday on January 23, Hargitay celebrates not just a record-breaking career but also the strength and wisdom that comes with age.

“I’m so proud and grateful,” she said about reaching this milestone. “I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.”
