How Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay Helped a Real-Life Prosecutor Solve Thousands of Sex Crimes

Mariska Hargitay’s commitment to justice extends far beyond her role as Detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Recently, Dateline NBC’s Andrea Canning revealed on the “Today” show how Hargitay’s real-life detective skills have made a significant impact. During her interview, Canning shared how the 60-year-old actress played a crucial role in aiding Michigan prosecutor Kym Worthy with an overwhelming backlog of sexual assault cases.

Prosecutor Worthy faced a daunting challenge when she discovered over 11,000 untested rape kits sitting neglected in an evidence room. Determined to address this critical issue, Worthy embarked on a mission to have these kits tested, but the massive undertaking required substantial funding. Enter Mariska Hargitay, who stepped up to the plate. Canning disclosed, “So, who stepped in? None other than ‘Law and Order’s’ Mariska Hargitay.” Thanks to Hargitay’s fundraising efforts, the testing was completed, leading to the resolution of thousands of cases and the identification of 22 serial rapists. Canning emphasized that the combined work of Worthy and Hargitay is creating a profound ripple effect across the nation, driving positive changes within police departments and prosecutors’ offices.

Hargitay’s real-life heroism isn’t limited to her philanthropic efforts. Earlier this year, while filming one of the final episodes of “SVU” Season 25, Hargitay was mistaken for a real NYPD officer by a young girl. The child, who had become separated from her mother at Anne Loftus Playground in Fort Tryon Park, approached Hargitay, believing she was the police officer in her character’s uniform. A witness reported that Hargitay immediately paused filming for 20 minutes to help the distressed child and reunite her with her family, demonstrating the same compassion and dedication she brings to her role.

The young girl, oblivious to the film crew and Hargitay’s co-star Ice-T, simply sought the help of what she believed was a real police officer. Hargitay’s genuine kindness and readiness to assist in a crisis exemplify the profound impact her character has had on both screen and reality.
