Determined to address this critical issue, Worthy embarked on a mission to have these kits tested, but the massive undertaking required substantial funding. Enter Mariska Hargitay, who stepped up to the plate. Canning disclosed, “So, who stepped in? None other than ‘Law and Order’s’ Mariska Hargitay.” Thanks to Hargitay’s fundraising efforts, the testing was completed, leading to the resolution of thousands of cases and the identification of 22 serial rapists. Earlier this year, while filming one of the final episodes of “SVU” Season 25, Hargitay was mistaken for a real NYPD officer by a young girl. The child, who had become separated from her mother at Anne Loftus Playground in Fort Tryon Park, approached Hargitay, believing she was the police officer in her character’s uniform. A witness reported that Hargitay immediately paused filming for 20 minutes to help the distressed child and reunite her with her family, demonstrating the same compassion and dedication she brings to her role.
