Mariska Hargitay Allegedly Feels a ‘Responsibility’ to Stay on ‘Law & Order’

Mariska Hargitay, the beloved star of Law & Order: SVU, has remained a steadfast presence on the show, navigating its highs and lows, while many other stars have come and gone. According to recent reports, Hargitay’s commitment to SVU shows no signs of waning, with the actress potentially staying on board as long as the series continues to air.

The Longevity of Mariska Hargitay on ‘Law & Order: SVU’

Hargitay, alongside her long-time co-star Ice-T, has been a part of SVU since its inception, making them the show’s longest-standing cast members. Despite experiencing moments of doubt, particularly after the departure of Chris Meloni, Hargitay found herself unable to walk away from the show. Reflecting on that period, she told People, “I did a lot of soul-searching of whether I wanted to go on. I was on my way to being at peace to be done.”

Her decision to stay has been a boon for the series, as Hargitay continues to lead SVU with passion and dedication. A recent insider report to Closer suggests that retirement is far from Hargitay’s mind. “She refuses to retire and is prepared to take this show as far as she can go. She doesn’t know what she’d do without SVU,” the insider revealed.

Hargitay’s commitment extends beyond personal ambition; she feels a deep responsibility to the show’s cast and crew, acknowledging that her departure could impact their livelihoods. “She feels a responsibility to them. They’d be out of a job without her,” the insider added.

Continual Growth and Learning on the Set

Despite the show’s long run, Hargitay continues to find fresh challenges and learning opportunities on SVU. She admitted that while some scenes feel repetitive, the show often surprises her with new and invigorating moments. “People think, Okay, you’ve done it. And yes, there are scenes where I’m like, ‘I’ve done this scene. I’ve done this scene 5,000 times and I can do it in my sleep and in Chinese.’ And then there’s something else, or another moment where I go, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ And I get so happy with how nervous I am,” she shared.

This continual element of surprise and learning has been pivotal in keeping Hargitay engaged. She has embraced new roles and responsibilities on the show, including directing and producing, which have reinvigorated her commitment. “I’m learning how to direct, I’m learning how to executive produce, I’m learning how to produce-produce. I’m learning about the puzzle of putting things together and weather and actor availability,” she explained.

The Future of Olivia Benson

While retirement may not be in the immediate future for Hargitay, she has contemplated the eventual conclusion of her character, Olivia Benson. She hopes that Benson will find peace and fulfillment after years of service. “I hope that she can get to a point where she feels like she’s done enough service and it’s time to rest and be and see the best that life has to offer,” Hargitay told E! News. “Because she’s spent so much time in the darkest of what life has to offer.”

Hargitay’s unwavering dedication to Law & Order: SVU and her continued passion for the series underscore her invaluable presence. As the show moves forward, fans can look forward to many more seasons with Hargitay at the helm, delivering powerful performances and advocating for important social issues both on and off the screen.
