As Law & Order: SVU gears up for its 25th season on January 18, it not only marks Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson as the longest-running character in prime-time drama but also cements the show’s place as the longest-running drama series in television history.
In a heartfelt interview with People, Hargitay reflects on her remarkable journey with Benson and turning 60 this year, a milestone she embraces with pride and gratitude.
“When I started, I was the second detective alongside Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). He was the seasoned lead, and I was trying to keep up,” Hargitay reminisces. As Benson evolved from a rookie detective to a lieutenant and ultimately a squad captain, Hargitay’s role also grew, especially after Meloni’s departure in 2011.
“I found myself growing into the role, and you could see this powerful woman emerging,” she reveals. This transformation, she describes as a rebirth, an experience both thrilling and profoundly challenging. “It felt like a rebirth, embracing my own power. It was both exhilarating and beautifully uncomfortable.”
Hargitay reflects on the iconic phrase “WWOBD” (What Would Olivia Benson Do?), which resonates with fans and occasionally guides her own decisions. “Fans often talk about it, and sometimes I find myself channeling Olivia’s strength and leadership in real-life crises. It’s a perfect feminist narrative.”
As the show celebrates its quarter-century mark, Hargitay admits to mixed emotions. “On one hand, it’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years. On the other, it feels like it’s always been this way,” she shares.
Beyond her acting career, Hargitay’s dedication shines through her real-world impact. She trained as a rape crisis counselor and established the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004, motivated by survivors who credited SVU with inspiring them to come forward about their experiences.
Approaching her 60th birthday on January 23, Hargitay is not only celebrating a groundbreaking career but also the wisdom and strength that comes with age. “I’m incredibly proud and grateful,” she says. “I feel stronger than ever before.”
