Chelene Knight’s novel Junie wins 2023 Vancouver Book Award

Knight turns into second author to win Vancouver Guide Award twice

The win makes Knight solely the second writer to land the prize twice. She gained again in 2018 for Expensive Present Occupant.

The opposite author to win twice is Michael Kluckner for Vanishing Vancouver in 1991 and once more in 2007 for Vancouver Remembered.

Set in a fictional model of Vancouver’s historic Hogan’s Alley, Junie is a multi-layered coming-of-age story a couple of younger woman named Junie who lives in Nineteen Thirties Hogan’s Alley, a Black group in East Vancouver. A vivid child, Junie lives along with her alcoholic, nightclub singer mom. The story explores the bumpy panorama of mother-daughter relationships, rising up and the demise of a as soon as vibrant neighbourhood.

The award, which comes with a $3,000 money prize, was introduced on September 22.

The 2023 Metropolis of Vancouver Guide Award jury included writers Molly Cross-Blanchard and Dina Del Bucchia, and community-engagement librarian Allan Cho.
